Himiko Nguyen

Himiko Nguyen (b. 1976 in Tien Giang) is one of the early artists in Southern Vietnam experimenting new mediums of contemporary art. Himiko is known for her intricate installations with provocative messages about self identity and gender issues. She opened Himiko Visual Cafe in 2005, which was a gallery and cafe for young artists to showcase their new practices and to hold various educational events. In July 2012, she had traumatic brain injury after a severe motorbike crash. Yet she has magically recovered from the injury and passionately returned to make art, just as her artist name ‘Himiko’ – in Japanese means the child who finds fire.
